Summer 2026 Program Details

Program Sessions

May 1–May 31
June 1–June 30
July 1–July 31

Students may participate in any session and do not need to commit to the full month.

Commitment Requirements

Minimum participation is 1 week, with flexible scheduling based on availability. Full-session attendance is optional.

Application Timeline & Materials

Applications open March 1, 2026.

Required materials include a CV or resume, a letter of intent, and a short Zoom interview.

Track Selection

Applicants must specify whether they are pursuing a Shadowing track (observation-based) or a Paid Internship track (hands-on experience).

Location & Availability

Indicate your first and second choice office locations, and provide your available dates and weekly schedule within your application.

Student Responsibilities

All participants must keep a daily log of experiences, questions, and reflections. This log supports any letters of recommendation or certificates of participation requested after the program.

Program Curriculum & Hands-On Experience

Explore + Practice + Achieve

Our program is designed to give students a structured, meaningful introduction to modern dental practice. From orientation and safety training to hands-on learning and optional case study review, each step provides valuable insight into the clinical and administrative skills that shape a successful dental career.

What You’ll Learn in Our Dental Internship & Shadowing Program

Midtown Dental Group provides comprehensive training, ensuring a safe and effective learning environment. Our program includes adherence to essential protocols and introduces advanced technology and systems to enhance patient care and outcomes.

Dentistry

Shadow and assist with exams, fillings, crowns, bridges, veneers, root canals, extractions, implant placement and restoration, and Invisalign therapy. Students also receive hands-on training with digital impressions and may learn to take radiographs, depending on state regulations.

Dental Assisting

Learn to set up and break down operatories, manage sterilization, maintain supplies, and support patient comfort. Students will work closely with doctors to ensure an efficient workflow and gain exposure to lab case management.

Dental Hygiene

Observe hygiene visits from start to finish, learn how to communicate proper oral hygiene techniques, and see firsthand how hygienists and doctors collaborate to deliver comprehensive patient care.

Administration

Gain experience managing calls and emails, reviewing schedules, checking patients in and out, confirming appointments, and helping ensure every patient enjoys a smooth, positive, and welcoming visit.

Setting You Up for Success: Orientation & Training

All participants undergo an orientation and safety training to ensure readiness for the clinical environment. Training includes:

HIPAA & Patient confidentiality

Learn how to protect patient information and uphold HIPAA standards in all clinical and administrative settings.

OSHA & workplace safety standards

Understand OSHA guidelines and safety practices that keep both patients and staff protected in a clinical environment.

Hazardous waste handling & disposal

Train in proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials to maintain a safe, compliant dental workspace.

Sterilization protocols

Follow step-by-step sterilization procedures to ensure all instruments and equipment meet strict safety standards.

Infection control procedures

Gain essential skills in preventing cross-contamination through proper disinfection and infection control techniques.

Room setup & instrument management

Learn how to prepare operatories, organize instruments, and maintain efficient clinical workflows.

Case Study Review

Students may choose to complete an optional Case Study Review, a rewarding opportunity to follow a patient case from start to finish. Participants observe and document all phases of treatment, gaining a deeper understanding of the diagnostic and procedural process. At the end of the session, students may present their findings in a professional case presentation format, highlighting what they’ve learned.

We offer both dental shadowing and internship opportunities at Midtown Dental Group —each designed to support aspiring dental professionals in unique ways.

Dental Shadowing

Shadowing is ideal for students and individuals who are exploring the dental profession as a potential career, foreign-trained dentists seeking to observe dental care in the United States, or those aiming to fulfill dental school admissions requirements. Shadowers observe our dentists, dental hygienists, and assistants in action, gaining valuable insight into clinical procedures, patient care, and the day-to-day operations of a dental office—all from a firsthand, observational perspective.

Dental Internships

Internships go a step further. Interns take on a more hands-on role, participating in clinical support activities (where appropriate), assisting with administrative tasks, and gaining exposure to state-of-the-art technology that enhances patient care. This experience is perfect for those looking to deepen their involvement and build practical skills in a professional setting, or for those who have already shadowed. Some of our interns also choose to complete a research initiative or case review presentation as part of their experience. Internships may be paid, or we can work with your institution to offer school credit.
