Endodontics is a specialty within the field of dentistry. The specialists are endodontists, and they focus primarily on saving infected teeth through root canal therapy. Root canal is the process by which the infection is removed along with the nerve and blood supply to the tooth and replaced with special filling materials.

  • Pulp

The most vital part of the tooth, the pulp originates in the very center, located underneath the enamel and dentin in what is referred to as the pulp chamber. The pulp is also known as the nerve of the tooth, containing blood vessels, connective tissue, and the large nerves.

  • Tooth Structure

The structure of the tooth is made up of four parts: enamel, dentin, cementum, and pulp. Enamel, mostly made of minerals, is the hard, white surface you see when you view the tooth. Dentin is the substance between enamel or cementum and the pulp chamber.

  • Root Canals

Root Canals, a commonly used term for the main canals within the dentin of the tooth, are filled with a highly vascularized, loose connective tissue, the dental pulp. This sometimes becomes infected and inflamed the infected tissue is removed by a surgical intervention known as endodontic therapy, commonly called ‘a root canal’.
