Dental onlays are very similar to inlays; however, onlays are used to treat decay and damage that is more significant. Dr. Daniell Mishaan will evaluate a badly damaged tooth. If he decides that the tooth needs considerable repair, but does not require a dental crown to cover the entire tooth, he will prescribe a dental onlay. First, an impression of the decayed tooth is taken, and a temporary onlay is placed over the tooth. The impression is then sent to a lab, where the onlay is created according to the tooth’s dimensions. When the patient returns to the dentist’s office, the temporary onlay is removed, and the permanent restoration is placed on the tooth and securely bonded using high-strength dental resins. This procedure can fix the problem, while retaining much of the original tooth material and actually increase the tooth’s strength. The greatest benefit of onlays is to help patients fix flawed teeth and avoid the eventual need for more extensive treatment with dental crowns, dental bridges, or dental implants.
